This course is open to any medical or non medical personnel who would like to learn more about the important role of nutrition, diet therapy, diabetes prevention and management of diabetic foot care. The course integrates nutrition and diet therapy with Basic and Advanced Diabetic Foot Care. According to Diabetes Canada Clinical Practice guidelines 2018, 11 million Canada are diagnosed with Diabetes and many lower limb amputations occurs as a result nerve damage, poor management of diabetes and diabetes foot care.
Prerequisites: Grade 12 or equivalent, Hepatitis B vaccine, TB skin, Criminal reference check, and First Aid, and CPR. Mal practice liability insurance is required if you are not a member of a regulatory college.
Health care providers with prior learning will be exempted if qualify.
Non-medical personnel will be expected to complete the Nutrition and Diet Therapy Diploma online component of the course before completing the Basic and Advanced Diabetic Foot care.

If student have been exempted from the nutrition component of the course the student will be expected to complete the Basic and Advanced Diabetic Foot care

- What is diabetic foot care
- Complications of Diabetes
- Look at factors that contribute to foot problems in geriatric and the diabetic clients
- Diabetes Management/self-care management
- Anatomy and physiology of the foot, structural deformities
- Common condition of the joints, and nails
- Diabetic Foot Health Education Checklist
- High Risk Assessment, Circulation, Sensation, Color of nail
- Skin conditions and common nail disorders of client’s including; Corns seeded, hard, and soft, Warts, Hallux Valgus, Rams Horn, Ingrown toe nail, Nail fungal, and Callus’.
Onsite Lab
After completion of theory, students will be expected to attend the 3 hour onsite lab after completing the diabetes theory and will be expected to purchasing the foot care kit to use in the lab.
At the onsite lab they will learn how to integrate the tools in providing foot care for high risk clients such as diabetics. Including:
- Diabetic foot screen assessment, monofilament testing
- Best Practices for Cleaning, Disinfection and Sterilization or tools
- Health Canada and IPAC Foot Care Infection Control Standards
- How to set up tools, use assessment forms, perform foot assessment using the monofilament testing to check for neuropathy in diabetics
- How to use tools and equipment safely including single use disposable tools including scissors, black file, rotary tools with disposable abrasive emery disc, disinfectant, plastic apron, goggles, N95 mask, face shield, gloves, carrying case etc..
- Best Practices in Reducing Risks of Cross Contamination when performing Diabetic foot care
- Sterilization with and Autoclave if using reusable tool
- Performing a foot care treatment, filing, cutting nails using nail nippers, ingrown scissors, using the black file to clean detritus.
- Theory and practice on the safe use of disposable foot file and use of rotary disc
- Using urea base product to decrease callus formation
- Health teaching on using proper foot wear
- When to refer to a primary health care provider
After completing the in class lab: Students will be expected to complete 20 hands on case studies that they will find on their own from their communities.
Each hands-on case study will take approximately 2 hours to complete.
Students will be expected to submit proof of completing 20 case studies with completed assessment forms with before and after pictures and write up using assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation process.
Foot care kit is not included.
Upon completion of both courses the Nutrition and Diet Therapy Diploma with Basic and Advanced Diabetic Foot care will be awarded a Diploma and a 1 year membership with the National Association of Holistic Health Practitioner under the modalities Nutrition counseling and Foot care Specialist
